Among the many traditional wastra from Indonesia, there is a type of fabric that in its manufacture uses hand stitching technique (jelujur), named sasirangan which comes from southern Kalimantan.
Sasirangan comes from the word sirang or manyirang which comes from the banjar language which means sewing technique by hand. Sasirangan has various motifs that have names such as: gigi haruan, bayam raja, gagatas, tampuk manggis, ular lidi, and others. Everything is made by hand stitching technique (jelujur).
The pattern can only made with hand stitching techniques makes Sasirangan fabric included in the slow fashion category which is also part of suistanable fashion, which is a fashion product that pays attention to survival, environmental balance as well as natural resources and human resources.
In line with the goal of encouraging the economy of the Sasirangan craftsman community in South Kalimantan, the Bank Indonesia Representative Office of South Kalimantan Province collaborated with Muslim fashion designer Irna Mutiara to create a design development program using the Sasirangan pattern by utilising natural dyes typical of the South Kalimantan area, namely ulin wood powder and indigo plants.
This work produces natural, beautiful, and minimalist fabrics as well as Sasirangan clothing with designs that are in accordance with the current trend development. This work is named: Irna La Perle Sasika which has the meaning of South Kalimantan fashion. It is hoped that this effort can be accepted by the public at large, both domestically and internationally.
